And Big wishes to apologize for his audio sounding bad. Apparently, one is supposed to record with the front of the mic facing one’s mouth. Who reads instructions, amiright?

In a sequel to his story “Plague Birds” that appeared on the Dunesteef on episode 92, Jason Sanford tells the story of Plague Bird Christina de Ane’s further adventures in the future earth that has been driven toward the brink of insanity by gene manipulation. She arrives in a new village, where the Alderman’s son has been brutally murdered, and is duty bound to dispense justice. But something just doesn’t seem right…outtakes

Also, Big and Rish talk about how much better The Dark Knight is than its predecessor Batman Begins. They also talk about how much better Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan is than its predecessor Star Trek: The Motion Picture. And that’s before the story even begins. You’d think we were in for a long show, but surprisingly, they reign it in after the story ends. You may not be searching for a way to deafen yourself by the end of the show after all.

Episode 124: The Question by Robert Lowell Russell

Is this our Valentine’s Day episode, or another anti-Valentine’s show? You be the judge.

It’s the question on everybody’s minds, as soon as they hear about fully-functional, human-like robots. And though you wouldn’t know it from listening to Rish Outfield, this story was not written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Afterward, very little gets said about robot sex, but there is a little more spoken about human relationships, and a couple of stories about inspiration are swapped. If you’re that guy who complained about platitudes, though, you will find nothing of worth here, so move along.

When Angela’s husband died, she was devastated. She just couldn’t stop dwelling on her pain, until a friend gave her a book to help distract her. Working her way through the hobbies in the book, she made it to “calendar keeping,” and that’s where it all went horribly wrong. Never buy a calendar from a goth chick!

Afterward, Big and Rish try to explain why this episode is so late, and talk about calendars and record-keeping (sounds fascinating, I know). Also, some kind of announcement is made in there somewhere.

Broken Mirror Story Event

We haven’t posted an official announcement with the rules and whatnot to this yet, so I figured I’d better before the contest is over and all.

The Broken Mirror Story Event is a story contest in which the participants are given a writing prompt, and they take that prompt and run with it however inspiration strikes them. Then the stories are read by our judges, and the top stories are produced as episodes of The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine. The fun of the event is getting to see how different all the takes on the same idea can be.

This years prompt is:

A phone rings in the middle of the night. The voice on the line says only one word…but it is enough.

And scene. I mean, sorry, not scene. And go! Start writing. You have until January 12, 2012 to write your story and submit it to submissions at dunesteef dot com. Also, we like to publish all the losing entries on our site in text format, so that those of us who aren’t judges can see them, and get that same fun experience that the judges got. This is not mandatory, and you may opt out of this. There’s always somebody every year who doesn’t want to participate in that part, but if you’d like to have your story published along with the rest, then folks can come to read the lot, and see where all the different takes went. Here are the stories from last year, and these are the stories from the year before. Check them out.
