Episode 110: Dark Detour by Lance Young

“Don’t touch it! It’s evil!”

For the captain and crew of the Nomad, the derelict spacecraft looks like a great opportunity for salvage. But their little detour may end up costing them a lot more than time or money.

Also, Big and Rish talk afterward. Novel, I know. Rish has been inspired by filmmaker Kevin Smith, and maybe they can get Announcer Man to participate in the show today.

Special thanks to Bryan Lincoln for producing today’s story and to Philippa Ballantine, Ray Saltrelli, Ayoub Khote, and Liz Lincoln for lending their voices to the episode.

  1. Is that a transporter from Space 1999 in today’s artwork?

  2. Could be…

I just searched for spaceship on Flickr, limited the search to creative commons images, and used the best picture I found. I’ve never seen Space 1999, so I can neither confirm nor deny the transporter.

  3. Cambodia Carl Says:

I think, if you look carefully, you can see Martin Landau’s frighteningly ugly face peering through one of the windows.

  4. Up The Ying Yang Says:

Yes. It is an Eagle from Space 1999. Interestingly there was an episode in 1999 that had an abandoned space ship haunted by an alien that was partly energy that ate people.

  5. When people start telling you that you can’t do it, or that it’s a terrible idea and won’t work… chances are it means your on the right track. People are scared of success.

Insert the Adam Sandler movie, “you can do it!” here…

  6. Cambodia Carl Says:

Let me get this straight, you cast Rish Outfield in the part of Singh, and then you cast someone named Ayoube Khote in the part of GARIBALDI??? Isn’t that like casting a black dude as Perry WHITE or a white guy as Sirius BLACK?

  7. After Rish’s rant in Episode 112, I hate to say this, but…

I found this story a little predictable.

Ok, that’s not fair. Not fair to me, I mean – it’s perfectly fair to the story. What’s really more accurate is that I felt that the story did not do enough to make the old horror tropes “pop” for me. Show me a horror story that follows the formula with life and vigor, and I’ll eat it up. This one seemed almost… paint-by-numbers.

That said, the craft was excellent. The pacing was very well done. The acting and production were, as usual, extraordinary. It wouldn’t be accurate to say that I didn’t enjoy myself – I did – but this is not a story I will go back to and listen again.
