Broken Mirror Story Event

Posted in Administrative on December 16, 2011 by dunesteef

We haven’t posted an official announcement with the rules and whatnot to this yet, so I figured I’d better before the contest is over and all.

The Broken Mirror Story Event is a story contest in which the participants are given a writing prompt, and they take that prompt and run with it however inspiration strikes them. Then the stories are read by our judges, and the top stories are produced as episodes of The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine. The fun of the event is getting to see how different all the takes on the same idea can be.

This years prompt is:

A phone rings in the middle of the night. The voice on the line says only one word…but it is enough.

And scene. I mean, sorry, not scene. And go! Start writing. You have until January 12, 2012 to write your story and submit it to submissions at dunesteef dot com. Also, we like to publish all the losing entries on our site in text format, so that those of us who aren’t judges can see them, and get that same fun experience that the judges got. This is not mandatory, and you may opt out of this. There’s always somebody every year who doesn’t want to participate in that part, but if you’d like to have your story published along with the rest, then folks can come to read the lot, and see where all the different takes went. Here are the stories from last year, and these are the stories from the year before. Check them out.

Thanks for participating, and get writing!

Submissions Closed Until Sometime In 2012

Posted in Administrative on November 2, 2011 by dunesteef

The Way Is Shut

Sorry, Charlie, the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine is closing submissions until 2012. It’s the holiday season, and to make the season bright, we’re giving our submissions editor and slush readers some time off. We’d like to thank all our readers and co-editors, and hope to give them a few weeks to catch up on stories and catch up on some Z’s. If you’ve sent us a story in the recent past, and we haven’t responded about it, just be patient with us. We will respond to it eventually, we promise.

Hold on to your potatoes, however. We’re not quite done with 2011 yet. At least possibly not.

Promo: The Podcast That Dares Not Speak Its Name

Posted in Administrative on May 9, 2011 by dunesteef

Rish asked me if I would play the promo for his new podcasting venture. Out of pity, after he told me how dull and two-dimensional the phantom zone is, I agreed. So, here you go.

The October Scary Story Event 2010

Posted in Administrative on October 1, 2010 by dunesteef

It’s October first, and that means The October Scary Story Event is underway. It’s a contest to write a scary story (any length) within the month of October, and submit it to us (that’s submissions(at)dunesteef(dotcom) and put OSSE Submission in the subject line). Our favorite story or two will be made into an episode of our show.

Broken Mirror Story Event 2010

Posted in Administrative, BMSE on May 7, 2010 by dunesteef

Between May 7th and June 7th, 2010, write a short story based on the following premise:
Story Chat
A CHILD IS PROCLAIMED KING (OR QUEEN), BUT IT TURNS OUT TO BE MORE THAN JUST A GAME.

This story can be any genre and of any length. However, our podcast usually buys Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy stories, and we prefer stories longer than five hundred words.

A couple of rules:

  1. No multiple submissions, please. If you have more than one take on this idea, only send us the one you feel is best.
  2. Seriously, write the story between May 7th and June 7th, based on the idea we’ve presented. You can always rewrite an old story and present it as though it’s new, but if you do this, at least have the decency to lie about it.
  3. In the subject line of your email, mention that this is for the Broken Mirror Story Event (or the BMSE/BME).
  4. Even though the event ends on June 7th, we would rather get a complete, proofread story a couple of days late than a rushed story with typos and errors on June 5th.

Send the completed story in the body of an email to submissions(at)dunesteef.com (replacing the “at” with @. Thanks for participating and being a creative person!

Submissions Closed Until 2010

Posted in Administrative on November 17, 2009 by dunesteef

In honor of the end of the year, The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine has closed story submissions. We appreciate all those who have sent their work to us, but in order to get through all our submissions, work on accepted stories, and pursue that elusive spirit of Kwanzaa, we are not taking anything new at this time.

Please check back here again in early 2010 for the doors to open up afresh. Happy holidays, and keep writing!

The October Scary Story Event

Posted in Administrative, Alex Moisi, Amanda Crum, Doug McIntire, Kevin Anderson, OSSE on October 3, 2009 by dunesteef

Once again, we at The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine will be having a special short story writing event during the month of October. Basically the deal is this: write a scary story within the month of October, and submit it to us. The best story or two will be made into an episode of our show. It doesn’t have to be an idea you came up with during the month of October, just write the story in October. And be sure it’s scary. That’s all it takes. You have a little less than a month now, so you’d better get started.

When you submit your story, be sure to note in the subject line that it is for the October Scary Story Event. That is all, return to what you were doing. Thank you.

Listen to last year’s winners:
The Ghost Of Sadie Worth by Doug McIntire
Megan’s Bridge by Amanda Crum
Halloween In July by Kevin Anderson
The Artist by Alex Moisi
